NUISANCES.

(TO THE EDITOB OV THE SOTTTHLAKD IIMB8.) Sib — Might I enquire, through your invaluable open column, whether the police are so completely engrossed in the trade or occupation of cattle lifting, that they have time for the performance of none of the other duties more pertinent to the force. I am induced to put this query from the fact that recently a policeman — I -beg pardon* — a constable in our principal streets has been a rare sight, the outskirts apparently affording more profitable hunting ground, and that in consequence, accumulations of filth, &c., are allowed to stagnate and stink in the immediate vicinity of our principal thoroughfares, in a manner painfully conspicuous to the olfactory sensibilities. Now, Sir, these collections of putrescent slush and rubbish are positive nuisances, affecting both th6 health and comfort of the citizens. Why should not the law against them be enforced with as much alacrity, stern severity, and impartiality as that against stray cows and horses. I would advise the -members of the force to leave the quiet milkers alone for a day, walk along Dee-street, occasionally turn their classic noses to windward, and they will, in more places than one, smell something infinitely worse than a rat. Tour's, &c, Citizen. Invercargill, 19th Nov.
