OREPUKI.

» . — (from a. coebespondent.) Nov. 9, 1868. Since my last, a Digger's Meeting has been held here, in reference to one of the subjects on which I wrote you — the want of postal communication. The grievance is becoming more seriously felt every day, and unless something is done by the Government in reference to it, j the dissatisfaction will increase. I have secured a copy of the resolutions passed at the meeting, which comprised the whole ox the working population — and got the chairman to certify to their correctness, and I now enclose the same, which you can either use as it is, or in any other shape at your discretion— the matter really needs publicity. The hardship to two hundred people, to be to all intents shut out of the world, is such that if it can be remedied, it ought to be. The petition got up at the meeting will be signed by all up here, and I hope it will have its effect. I have no change to report in the workings, and do not expect, I shall be able to give much account until nearly Christmas, when a good deal of washing up will be done. The certainty that the tracks will now be very quickly cut, and a large surface of ground in this way opened to prospecting, has ; put every one in good spirits. Without a i doubt, this outlay wiil very soon pay for itself, besides being the only way by which the true value of the district can be found out. I send this by a casual; messenger, and have not time to writemore. The following are the resolutions above referred to: — ■•;.■-.' Afc a meeting beld at Orepuki' on Saturday, November 7th, Mr John Horr in the chair, the following resolutions were carried unanimously: — Proposed by Mr J. Williams, and seconded by Mr T. Weston, "That inthe opinion of this meeting Orepuki is j

entitled to a Weekly Mailfromffiferiw^:^ inasmuch as the district- pays^ajiarw > ; proportion of the revenue, and th«population is much larger than, that of:; -.v, other places which have a regular \ 'mm } ■ service at a much larger cost; tpvtlra. k Government than a "Weekly Mail &?&: Kiverton to Orepuki would occasion. „ Proposed by Mr Q-eo. Roredam, .and seconded hy Mr H. Cressy, "That a I petition to the Chief Postmaster, Southland, he drawn up for signature, and forwarded to T. Daniel, Esq., M.P.C., asking him to use his influence to obtain for Orepuki a Weekly Mail." Proposed by Mr Geo. Stevenson, and seconded by Mr T. Macgee, "That the thanks of this meeting be tendered to T. Daniel, Esq., M.P.C., and W. H. Pearson, Esq., M.P.C., for the interest they have taken in bringing before the Government the requirements of this field. ,
