The following is taken from the ' Daily Times,' 4th November : — "Wellington, Nov. 3. Mr Richmond has returned here from Hawke's Bay. The 114 recruits from Auckland under the command of Major St. John, were inspected by Colonel Haultain on landing this morning, and appear to be a promising body of men. On Sunday morning news reached Wanganui that Tito Kowaru had reached a point 7 miles south of the redoubt at j Wereroa. j The Wanganui Cavalry immediately j rode off to reinforce Wereroa, and the : Ist class Militia marched to Kai-Iwi j . the same evening. j Mr Durie, junior's house on the Wairoa on the North bank of the Waitotara was attacked on Saturday night, and he had barely time to escape without . dressing. Tito Kowora's force is in three divisions. Immediately this alarming news , reached "Wellington the steamer Wanganui was directed to get under weigh for the conveyance of the Auckland recruits to Wanganui with all speed.
