PENNY READINGS.

(TO THE EDITOB OF THE SOUTHLAND TIMES.) Sib — I am glad to see the subject of "Penny Readings" brougbt before the public, and hope to see the subject ventilated as these popular entertainments, at the period of cessation, were in the zenith of success, and I feel sure it was a matter of chagrin to the majority of our residents, that are interegnum took place. As there are still some outstanding liabilities the sooner those who are supposed to constitute tho Managing Sub-Committee place themselves in the hands of the public the uetter, so that new blood may be infused to regulate the Society and uphold its good name. I cordially agree with Mr Smith's remarks in your last issue, and " Observer" in the other local journal writes to the point, with this exception, that if he knew the V.P. thoroughly he would barely hint at his resignation. It will be in the recollection of those who attended the meeting which appointed, the Sub Com-

mittee of Management, that, after the election of that gentleman to the office of Vice- President, which was thrown out as a bait to retard his meddlesome propensities, he for once threw off his accustomed sang-froid, and in an agitated manner looked round to soliqit some one to propose him as a member of that board, and since then he has assumed autocratic functions, which it was never intended he should exercise, and by a means peculiarly his own has endeavoured to nullify the action of the two energetic members of the committees If the cause is popular, surely a Board of Management can !be found||who will studypopularity and work harmoniously. — I am Sir, your's, &c. Vigilans. Invercargill, sth November, 1868. .
