NELSON.

October 19th.. A. severe shock of earthquake took place at Nelson at fourteen minutes past midnight last night. It lasted about 45 seconds, and was accompanied with loud subterraneous rumblings. The shock appeared to have a partly vertical and partly horizontal motion and to travel from north-west to south-east. It was severely felt in the country districts. ' .. Some damage was occasioned to chimneys, and animals were considerably alarmed; Smaller shocks Bucceeded,and continued throughout the night. The tide was somewhat irregular. No such shock has been felt since 1855. The chimneys of the Government Buildings were shaken, and partly turned round. The day was close and sultry, with sudden intervals of cold at times. The night was close and still, with heavy .masses of clouds towards .the north-east; and strong gusts of .wind at intervals continued throughout the night.
