COMMERCIL INTELLIGENCE.
f r Times Office, } r Saturday Evening. : The following are the Customs Beturns for ■":.-: Friday, Oct. 28.
The 'Daily Times ' (Otago), of the 21st inst., reports:— *-? . Nothing stirring- in- the import markets to-day, and sales generally- of small account. A moderate •mount of up-country orders are in course of execution, but coastwise orders have been light. In breadstuff's,' we hear of no change ; the business doing in flour is small, and until some confidence in the value is re-established, will likely remain zo. In. grain, but litUe going forward. There are no buyers for wheats at present ; and oats, though lately reported firmer, have not improved in value. A light business has been done in sugars, though there is inquiry made for good yellow crystals, and at slightly reduced iate», all the parcels of good sorts in first hands would likely move. Some moderate sales of congous in chests, at Is 6d for medium, and 2s for fine, in boxes, have been made? and in liquids, Hennesßy*s brandy, both in oase and bulk.- Tennent's ale (pints), d.p., and Scotch ales, in bulk, £5. TherVhas lieeri. nothing doing in the auction marts. '' : • The.Timara Herald of the 17th instant, reports: — ■ - - ; The news by the mail of the fall in the price of wool has not at present made any change in ■business, but station properties are less firm and less inquired, for. One, thing in our favor is that 'sheep farmers have not drawn so heavily upon their clips as in former years. Should the decrease in price amount to 3d per pound for all sorts, it will make a difference of about £30,000 to the district in last year's clip, a very considerable sum among so few persons. We do not thiDk, however, that washed wool and superior greasy will be sold at so great a decline, as the sprts have not increased in the same proportion 'as faulty greasy since last year. Agricultural prospects are good, a* the farmers generally had 'their crops in before the late rains came on, which • -have had a most beneficial effect generally, and especially upon the graßS. The • Lyttelton Times' of the 17th instant ■ reports : — . .We jcannot report the slightest change for the better in business. Beyond a few station orders, there is really nothing doing. The news of the .iall in the price of wool has served to still more '. 1 depress 'trade. ■ Quotations remain unchanged. The grain trade has not been quite bo active. ,"<Wlieafc is offering at 6s 6d without finding buyers. The export of oats to Victoria continues very large; the Omeo took 7000 bushels; the Southern Cross h&B nearly completed the loading of a full cargo ; and the A. E. Badger is loading -»t Timsru. When these shipments are complete, o.ur market will be nearly bare. Barley is improving in value. ~~The ' New Zealand Herald' of the 10th inst., Teports of the Auckland market as follows : — Stocks have been considerably increased since our last report by arrivals from Australia and the Pouth. The long expected ship Excelsior arrived in harbor to-day from London. Her cargo will importers with most of the articles which have been scarce, and as the Siam is now daily expected*,' the market may be considered sup- . plied with goods of almost every description. -Business has continued quiet throughout the - ' week ; but fibipmentß to the Thames have been - somewhat larger than during the proceeding week.
