SOUTHLAND AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.

SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING A' special general meeting of. the above Association was held in the Masonic. Hall, Prince of Wales Hotel, on Wednesday, the 30th ult. The attendance was numerous.' The President, Robert Hamilton, Esq., occupied the chair. . The mihntes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The chairman, then called uoon the Secretary to the' 'business to be 'broiight forward. ■ Mr Ham stated the meeting was called earlier than the date mentioned in the rules and regulations, for the holding of the annual meeting, for two- reasons.: Several subscribers had represented that the date of last year's show was injudiciously fixed ; and the Yard and Finance Committees, (desired that the election of officebearers for the ensuing year should be elected before any further contracts for fencing were entered into; Therefore with the sanction of the Yice-Presidenfc and several members of the committee,.he had called the meeting. It was scarcely necessary to make any remarks, as the report for the year had been sometime in the 'hands of the subscribers, but it would not be out of place to supplement the report by stating what had- been done. since it was • published. A deputation waited upon His Honor the Superintendent with regard to obtaining a grant or lease of a site of ground , for .^ permanent show-yard. His Hontir offered to place at , the disposal of the Association a fine section, containing five acres, adjacent to the cricket ground. The Committee, considering; it desirable that the ground should be : , taken .. and at once cleared, tenders were called for the work, one of which was accepted, and the ground is now ready for fencing. The chief . business was the election of- a president, a vice-president, a treasurer, and a secretary, who retired from office by effiuxion of time, and to ballot ,out seven members of- the Directory, and elect seven gentlemen to fill their places ; also to fix the date of next- show. The Treasurer (Mr, J v Dalgleish) read the statement as to the financial position of the Association, showing that,' notwithstanding the payments for tbe clearing of the Show Yard ground/ and other accounts, and after deducting some of the subscriptions "as doubtful, there was a balance of £102. In retiring from office, he could congratulate the Association on its position, and say for himself, and he • believed for those with whom he had worked in ' establishing the Association, that they now desired tor retire fromofiice to make room : for ./the (infusion of new blood; He should have much pleasure in promoting to, the fullest extent ttie' advancement of the Association,' but he must decline -to be-again nominated for the office he then held. It had taken up during the pastyear-svgreat deal of time, and he thought that he should' how be permitted to take a less arduous position. ' The President (Mr R.. Hamilton), the VicePresident (Mr^W. Cochran) and .the .Secretary (Mr^HamJ each endorsed the sentiments of the Treasurer, and 'offered to give every assistance to those who might be selected to fill the offices they held; .'■ -'. / •.-.■,■. The election of President was then proceeded with. The following gentlemen were proposed, viz: — Messrs John DalgUesh, John Morton, Wm. Cochran, and JJ. Hamilton. Messrs'" Dalgh'esh, and' Cochran .' declined to accept the nomination, and Mr Hamilton stated that he would be much better pleased if they would relieve him from ■ 'office:' "The ballot was then taken, and Mr John Morton was declared duly* 'elected.- '■ - '■'■'■ '' ' • •■ ■'. • '\\ , A vote of thanks to Mr Hamilton for his past services, was unanimously passed. . The election of Vice-President then took place.' For this office, Messrs Hodgkinson, 'Rußsell) Swale, Bell, and Smyth, were proposed. -The result Df the ballot was stated to be in favor of Mr A. J. Smyth. Mr Gtoodsir was elected Treasurer. : .» i. « < --•« -■-■:• •-■ „ , _-.^« -,. : "For "Secretary,- Messrs" Crouch," Napier, and Ham were proposed. It was, however, .at lengtbV determined that the show should 'take place during the last week in Jfovember, idiv the -first week in December. , r , ,,,.,,, v? < It was further resolved that a show' of Entir| Horses should be held during the present month; and that the Directors be empowered to complete the arrangements, * Nearly £100 were subscribed for the forthcoming show during the evening.
