By the arrival of the P.N.Z. and A.R.M. Company's s.s. Otago, we are in receipt of Australian files. We take the subjoined commercial intelligence from the 'Argus,' sth September:—
Since the excitement of the mail's arrival has been got. over, and everything has been culled from the advices to hand likely to prove in any way favorable to trade, business reaesumes the unsatisfactory and depressed aspect which prevailed previous to the Avoca's coming in. An extremely quiet day has been passed, and complaints of dullness are as loud as ever. Breadstuffs Bhow decidedly less firmness, for though we continue to hear of trade sales of flour at £17 10s to £18, the rates ruling of late the larger buyers show much less disposition to purchase in quantity, even if offered at £17. Oats are steadier, at 3s 7d to 3s Bd, at which ■ales of New Zealand are reported. Some 4,000 bushels of malting barley were taken up at a price withheld. Maize (sound) is very scarce, and difficult to be got under 3s 7id to 3s Bd, though inferior is offering at 3s 5d to 3s 6d, without finding buyers. Bran has been run up to 2a ; a line of 10,000 bushels changed hands at within a penny of this price. Sales of cornsacks are mentioned at 11s 3d in bond. The public ■ale of the Mobile's ; cargo of new season teas attracted a good attendance, and the auctioneer was successful in getting rid of over 4000 packages, a large quantity being boxes. The prices realised from the box ranged from Is 3Jd to Is 10|d. . We learn of a line of ninety chests of last season's teas having been placed at Is 4d. A., small shipment, of native Ceylon coffee was quitted at 7£d., or thereabouts. In hops sales have been made at is 7d to Is lOd, according to quality. In malt signs of increased firmness appear, and for late shipments, to arrive about six weeks hence, as much as 11s has been offered. . We have no actual business, however, to report aa yet. We also observe more inquiry for blasting powder, which evidently means business. Outside brandß of kerosene oil have been qnitted at Is Sid. Under the hammer some | 211 packages of tobacco were disposed of at 9fd to Is for half-pounds, 9£d to Is 3fd for pounds ; aromatics realised lOd to Is 2d, while faulty tens were quitted at s£d to 6£d net. £he sales of timber comprise spruce deals, Scotch flooring, rlear pine, white pine, shelving, pickets, cedar boards, hardwood, &c. An easier feeling prevails in brandy. Sales of Hennessy's case have been made at 275. No buyers fqr bulk, can be. got, except at lower rates £]sq.
