COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.
Times Office, Saturday Evening. The following are the Customs Returns for — Friday, August 21. Tobacco, 141bs LI 15 0 Sugar, 24751bs 10 6 3 £12 1 3 The ' Daily Times,' 21st inst., reports : — We hare still to note a languid state of trade. The business doing to-day has been of a miscellaneous and unimportant character. Importers have, pending the receipt of correspondence per Panama mails, been offering very few goods, and "none oi the staples hare been dealt in to any 'extent. The market for breadstuffa is destitute of activity, but there is now some prospect of an improved inquiry. Millers demand £19 and £19 10s, respectively, for large and small bags. Wheats are coming to hand only in small lots, and a comparatively trifling quantity appears to remain in growers' hands. Oats are quiet. The small sales in general goods fnrnish nothing •worthy of remark. By auction, no general merchandise has been offering, or anything of interest occurred. : The ' Lyttelton Times,' of the I7th August reports: — The grain market evinced no signs of improvement on Saturday. Samples of both wheat and oats were more numerous than has been the case for some time past, but few buyers were to be found. The parcels that did change hands were very small, and no alteration in price took place. Barley remains as before, and the other departments of the market offer no room for remark. Messrs Wilson and Alporfc sold cattle at the Oashel street yards, on Saturday, as under : — Fair quality cows, £9 ; inferior do, £6 ; two-year old steers, £5 10s 4 yearling do, £4 j quantity of salted hides, 5s 9d each ; mutton tallow, 28s per cwt ; a lot of forest trees, quicks, and evergreens broujht feir prices ; a spring-cart was withdrawn at £18. •
