The 'Daily Times," (Otago) 15th August, reports : — Business has to-day possessed a little more aDJmation,^hßJLJKs»;!^jginsjjaye occurred chiefly in small parcels, and import hoUsea d.oi«ot-ap. pear to have heen engaged in any very noticeable opi-rations. The state of markets has not been perceptibly . affected by advices received, and general quotations scarcely vary fiom oar last report. In breadstuff's there, is a continued dull demand, and neither millers nor other holders are doing anything, except for current trade requirements ; in the meantime prices are unchanged^ and without any immediate prospect of alteration. Sales of sngars are reported at full rates, a parcel of fair counters realising £33, and bright yellow crystals, £35. The trade are, however, in anticipation of shipments arriving, indisposed io stock to any extent. Medium to good medium congous have been quitted at 2s to 2s 2d for small packages, and Is lid to 2s lid for chests. There is a better disposition to deal in candles and kerosene, but no transactions. At the sale of general merchandise, at Messrs M'Lan dress, Hepbhrn, and Co.'s rooms, there was a good attendance, but apparently an indifference to buy. Some few lines, however, reached limits, amongst which were^tfrey. peas, 16d ; Provincial cured hamSjJ^Jd ; Canterbury bacon, 7d ; Liverpool &*gjj,2li ; herrings, in firkins, 10a ; fair Mauritius 'Counters, 335 ; also Wellington and Canterbury butter, out of condition, at low rates.
