BISHOP JENNER.

(TO THB BBITOB OF THE SOTTTHLAKD TUCKS.) Sib — I am extremely sorry to find a discussion re-opened on the subject of the appointment of a Bishop to a diocese which has for. its jurisdiction Otago and Southland. None more than myself deprecate any hasty or premature action on the part of the authorities in England, but once the important ceremony of consecration having taken place, it is not in the power of man to undo the work, and Bishop Jenner, (unless formally deposed, in which case he would still be a bishop) is undoubtedly our Diocesan, and further, by their own action, the Invercargill Vestry is pledged to receive him. Were the Eural Deanery Board to agree to receive a bishop and proceed to the election of any other clergyman, (which I know would be the wish of some) I think there would be no possibility of his consecration in Emgland. A case in point has lately occurred, where without exception, the Bishops of England, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, -and the United States of America, besides the two Houses of Convocation, have pronounced the teaching -of a Colonial ■ Bishop to be a deadly heresy, and he has denied the jurisdiction in England to depose him, and he holds the see ; the Bishops of the united Church cannot, according to a high legal opinion, consecrate any other to that see. It must be in rememberance of many that when great indignation was . feltr by English Churchmen at the Bishop of Some establishing a hierarchy in England, it was found impossible to take any action in opposition thereto, because the names of the sees were altered. Had the Romish Church consecrated an Archbishop of Canterbury, instead of Westminister, the established Church of the land could have withstood such an attempt successfully. It seems, however, that it is different as regards the colonies, for in Australia and New Zealand we are possessed of two Bishops to one see, viz — the Anglican and Somanist — I am, your's, &c. D.M. Invercargill, 18th August 1868.
