WELLINGTON. — -— • — DIVISION ON MR FOXES MOTION. GOVERNMENT MAJORITY OP NINE. (FEOM OT7B OWJ* COBRESPONDBOT.) Thursday, August 13. Last night Mr Fox made his reply on the debate which has occupied the House for the last few days, and which threatened a ministerial crisis. His speech, which occupied two hours and ahalf, was pointed, forcible, and animated. He endeavoured to show that the Government had either mistaken, or misrepresented the popular feeling ; that they had no policy, and that consequently the colony was drifting towards disaster. When he resumed his seat he was greeted with cheers from the opposition. A division followed and resulted, as had been expected, in a large majority for the G-overnment* In a Hoase of 59 members, the ministry gained a majority of nine, the numbers being 34 to 25.
