Times Office, Thursday Evening. The following are the Customs Returns for— Wednesday, August 12. "Whisky, 35 gals 21 1 2 Wine, 28 gals 5 12 0 Drapery ... ... 68 13 2 ■ £95 6 4 The.' Argus ' (Melbourne) of the 7th August, reports :-— The import markets continue to maintain an aspect of extreme dulness. The sales effected partake more or less of a retail character, and not the slightest pro3pect of an improvement is presented. Ther* is nothing whatever doing in breadstuff. The smaller buyers of flour still pay LlB, though there are no purchasers of quantities at over Ll7. No sales of wheat have come under our notice, but we understand that there are purchasers ready to operate at a price equivalent to the value of flour. Make is very firm, Belling freely at 3s 6d. Hops are inquired for ; we hear of a parcel of Bavarian having changed hands at Is 4Jd, while for a very superior shipment of 1867 Kents as much as Is 8d in bond was realised. There is not much actual business to report in teas, though we learn of inquiries being experienced, and sales are pending. In tobaccoes, which do not command much notice, we are informed of the sale of a shipment of Two Seas, dark half-pouuds, at an extreme figure. The brand is very scarce, and much wanted. Bather a large parcel of tartaric acid, in cask, has been placed at Is 6d. Trade parcels of salt are quitted at £7. In liquids, sales of Bass's bulk ale, No 3 have been made at £7 108. Trade parcels of Hennessj's case brandy countinue to be taken up at 235. We understand that at the first ordinary general meeting of the London and Anstralian Agency Corporation (Limited), held in London on the 11th June last, a dividend at the rate of ten per cent, was declared." The 'Hobart Town Mercury* of the 4th inst., reports that ' Business for the week has opened with inactivity, and prices remain generally as last reported. The news from the colonies has not affected this market in any way. Quotations are as under : — Flour, £17 ; wheat, 6s 6d to 7s ; English barley, 5s ; Cape do, 3s 6d ; oats, 2s 3d to 2s 9d. Wheat and flonr are firm at above quotations. For butter, bacon, cheese, &c, quotations are merely nominal, and sellers are glad to accept reasonable rates. We may quote butter at from 6d to 9d per lb, and cheese at from 6d to 8d per lb. In potatoes there is a little improvement, L 4 10s being now given for good samples for shipment." Our Launceston files are to the sth instant. The ' Chronicle ' of that date says : — • The recent news from California is of a very undecided character as to the extent of future shipments of breadstuffs thence to the Australian colonies. Holders here assert that the tenor of the news justifies an advance in prices. That, however, is matter of opinion. If we are to read the future by the light of the past, holders of breadstuffs in these colonies should dread the arrival of a few cargoes from California as they would the advance guard of an enemy. Should prices rule high enough here to encourage Californian speculators to swamp the Australian markets with breadstuffs after their harvest, now ready for shipment, the result will be very disastrous to the Australian growers of cereals this season. These are considerations which, however, do not affect holders, who are seldom growers of grain, and prices remain without much change from hist week. First-class brands of flour, £17 per ton ; country brands, £15 to £16 ; wheat, 6s 6d; oats, 2s lOd to 3s per bushel. Potatoes are in demand at £3 5s per ton.'
