ARRIVAL OF THE S. S MATAURA, FROM PANAMA.
■» (From the "Wellington " Evening Post." The s.s. Mataura, G-. E. Bird, E.N.E., commander, -arrived in this port on Monday morning ; she left Panama on the 21* st June, at 8.30 a.m., with mails, passengers and cargo from Southampton, June 2nd, per s.s. Tasmanian to Aspinwall direct, arriving on the 19th June, at 8.30 p.m. ; she made this passage in 17 days 4 hours, including detention at Water Island ; the Mataura from Panama to Opara experienced unfavorable light winds and weather, which island was reached on the Bth July at 5 p.m., after taking in 200 tons of coal left on the following day at 2 p.m. ; on the 11th a heavy gale came on from the westward, after which experienced a succession of heavy gales and strong winds from N.W. to S.W. with high seas ; on the 14th a gale of great violence was experienced from N.W. with a tremendous sea ; obliged to stop the engines and lay-to for 13 hours ; on the 15th weather slightly moderated, but continued more or less boisterous till within a day of making the coast; on July Ist, passed a ship in latitude 16 deg. S., longitude 116 deg. W., steering to the southward. The following is her list of passengers : — For Wellington— Mr and Mrs Z. F. Poole, Miss Marienberg, Mr and Mrs Gr. S. Baker, Miss Baker, Mr and Mrs C. P. Baker and 2 children, Miss A. Gannaway, Master F. Grannaway, Mr E. Montalk, Mr and Mrs W. Maxwell, Mr and Mrs J. Maxwell and child, Mr B. j Stevens, Mrs A. G-annaway, Master W. Grannaway. For Auckland —Mr and Miss M'Laughlin, Messrs C. Furlong and ~W. Smith. For Nelson — Mr J. Mackay. For Otago — Mr D. Haynes. For Melbourne — Mr and Mrs G-arrett and child, Messrs Bell, Scott, and Price. For Sydney — Mr and Mrs Boisacq, Miss Haag, Mr Hill, Mrs Briggs and infant.
