;| . Mtkd |J mtxi i _ — •*- THE POOR MAN'S WIFE. 1 Tit lady fair, with her jewelled hair. ..ind her dress of silken aheen, , And her Bnowy hands, so small and Boft, Has not more joy, I ween. Than she whose hands with toil are rough, 1 Whose days with work are rife j \ For Heaven "has many a blessing pure, To cheer the poor man's wife. Cares she for jewels in her hair, When every satin stress, Shines 'neath her heart "and careful touch, In Nature's loveliness ! When a fond word from her husband's lips Falls on her eager ear, And a kiss upon her flushing brow Proclaims her fair and dear, She needs no dress of silken sheen ' In his fond eyes to shine ; j In the graceful flow of muslin soft, For no richer does she pine. She worked at it buisily day by day, To give him a new surprise ; And she feels repaid for her pleasant toil, With the praise in his dear eyes. What if her hands are no longer soft, Is her work not pleasant toil ? For the tidy room and the dinner good, Has she not her husband's smile ? And is there not joy in the happy thought, More precious than gold or pelf, When she sees the neatness her hands have wrought, That she did it all herself? The lady fair has blossoms rare, In her hot-house and gardens-green ; But the poor man's wife has a deeper joy, In the flowers she tends, I ween ; And she gathers them with a thankful heart, Aud blesses their grace and bloom, For, as fair as in the grand boudoir, They shine in her humble room. Yes, the poor man's wife has many a joy, Pure from the world above, As long as in her lowly home There shines the light of love ; For love will gild the meanest place With a sunny ray from Heaven ; And the richest home will still be poor, If that sunshine be not given. Akon. ♦ THE SONG- OF THE SEA. Under me, under me, down in the deep, From east to west, wherever I spread, Mortality's relics, heap upon heap, Lie bleaching bare on their slimy bed j A skeleton babe to a skeleton form In love's last clasp are locked, and lie All undisturbed, 'mid calm or storm, On the spot where first they sunk to die, Ho ! ho ! when tempests blow, My warrior waves, like bloodhounds, sweep From shore to shore with howl and roar, And gather their prey 'mid foam and spray, To fill their treasure-house — the deep. Together in rest lies many a knight, Brave stalwart sons of many a clime ; In quiet they wait the trumpet call, That knells the doom of Father Time. With dauntless visage they met the foe, Whose weapons are wind/and mist, and rain; In martial gear they sunk below, As if they sought the battle-plain. Ho ! ho ! when tempests blow, Coward and hero alike they fare j My warrior-waves will find them graves, Any bury them from the blows of air. Hugging his treasure with jealous bones, A metal-gatherer's carcase lies,. . As if he dreamt his precious stones Might buy him a place in Paradise ; \ • The jewel that God had given him — " onla With eyes of blue and hair of brown "^-jHe flung "from the arm she leant upon, ; With curses, when the ship went dowft. Ho ! ho ! when tempests blows, c Love but fetters the limbs, you know, Ho ! ho ! when tempests blow, Where doeth the miser's treasures go ? The mighty Lords of Earth, their slaves Of every clime and every race Like brothers meet beneath the waves, Breast to breast and face to face. Caste may claim its points of pride, From hovels upwards unto thrones j But who can tell them, side by side, A hero from a helot's bones ? Ho ! ho ! when tempests blow, Pedigree to the winds must go, Ho I ho ! tney meet below, Slaves and sultans, row on row, Time was, when Earth from pole to pole Felt the clasp of my clammy hand ; Where'er my heaving waters roll, They lave the length of a buried land. Under me, under me, down in the deep, From east to west wherever I spread, Mortality's relics, heap upon hrap, Lie bleached and bare on my slimy bed. Ho ! ho ! when tempests blow. My warrior-waves, like bloodhounds, sweep From shore to shore, with howl and roar, And gather their prey, 'mid foam and spray, To fill their treasure-house — the deep. OFFICIAL NOTIFICATIONS.
