♦ ■Wellington, Tuesday. — The Kuabine arrived this morning from Sydney, haying left on the 2nd inst. Passengers for Otago — Mrs Stevens and child, Mr and Mra Barton, Messrs Roberts, Stevens, and Sidey. There has been a great conflagration at Sandridge, Victoria. The Pier Hotel and seven houses burnt down. Two live* were lost — a cabman named O'Callaghan, and Mr Charles Strelle, a retired Indian officer. — Brisbane. — Bew-r ley Brother's sawmills have been burnt to the ground. The mills, with the whole of the Btock and valuable machinery, all totally destroyed. The loss is estimated at. £5000. Some South Sea Islanders have murdered Mr Gibbie, of Sutter Eiver, and. Mr Beel, of the Kennedy District. There is an exodus of people from Melbourne to Maryborough (Queensland.) Berths are being taken up very rapidly. — There is news from Auckland to the 4th instant. There has been a magnificent washing up at the Manakau claim. Twelve hundred and sixty ounces of gold were obtained from one ton and a half of stuff. The ground at Tapu is shown to be exceedingly rich by stone which has been crushed. Auriferous
deposits have been found in every part of the Province. — A revised Commission of Peace has been issued.— The Exeoutiye informed the Council this afternoon, that they had failed to arrange the Slip dispute, with the contractors, a want of confidence motion has been tabled there* on. — Major Von Tempskey's company has arrived at Patea. He and Majof M'Donnell have rather unexpectedly left the front for Wanganui.— Another sup* posed murderer has been apprehended.
