COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.

Tike 3 Office, . , -^ Tuesday Evening. The fo^owing are the • Customs returns for — ]

By the arrival of the Gothenburg we are placed in possession of later Australian advices. The i " Argus " of the 25th inst., contains the follow- j ing item of commercial intellingence :— In the import markets to-day not the slightest appearance of animation has been perceptible, and- transactions as a rale have been of little account. In breadstuff's the demand for flour ha* not resulted in sales, for though buyers hare presented themselves willing to operate, the price offered (£2O 10s.) failed to draw out holders. Of wheat we hear of a line of about eight thousand bushels of Port MacDonnell having changod hands to land, on terms withheld. In feeding grain we hear of lower rates having been accepted for oats ; a line of 2,000 bushels has been quitted under the hammer at 3s Bd. A parcel was sold privately on rather better terms. Supplies of maize are again somewhat bare, and small sales are in consequence readily effected at 3s 91., though for quantities over 3s 8d could not be obtained. In sugars we quote a considerable improvement, the damaged portion of the Heather Bell's cargo, some 2,000 bags, having this forenoon found ready buyers at an advance of over 30s on late sales. The damaged portion of the Edith Smith's cargo is advertised for auction sale on Monday. Operations in tea are not on a large scale, tiie demand being limited to supplying the more immediate wants of the trade. Sales of fine ration congous are mentioned at Is 4d. In liquids we hear of a parcel of Dennis Mounie's brandy having been disposed of at close on 7s 9d., the trade rate for this brand. We note the arrival in the bay of a shipment of fuE strength . and full contents JDKZ geneva, for which there haa been a good deal of .inquiry, though without as yet leadiifg to business. .We have Sydney papers to the 20th inst. The " Herald " of that date reports : — " Since the departure of the mail the markets have presented no feature worthy of note ; a limited . business has been done in articles of general consumption at late Tates. A steady trade demand exists for breadstuff's, but buyers evince no disposition to burthen themselves with large stocks of either wheat or flour. Sales of leading brands of bulk ale have been made at £7 10s to £7 12s 6d, and small lots at higher rates ; and of bottled at 10s to 10s 6d. The market is almost bare of rum, for which extreme rates are demanded ; and were it not for the Sugar Company's supply; the non- arrival of some of the due ships would have caused considerable incon•v enience to those in the trade. Whiskey is also inquired for at full rates. Some private sales of sugars have been made at market rates. For teas there haa been a steady demand, both for local use and export, at prices ranging from £6 10a to £8 10s for ration to good mediun congous." " During the week ending to-day 12,9180z. of gold were received for coinage at the Sydney .Branch Mint; coin to the amount of 78,000 sovereigns wa3 issued during the same period. . " At the weekly produce sales, held this morning, there was a good demand for shipping parcels of tallow, and last week's prices were readily obtained for all descriptions. Mutton realised £2>i to £36; good boiling beef, £33 v to £33 12s6d; inferior, from £29 upward. Hide? were in request, but at prices which showed that the decline noticed last week is likely to continue, unless orders from the other colonies prevent local manufacturers ruling 'the 'market; but even at the rates now paid there is no inducement to buy for the London market. Extra weights sold at 14s to 183 3d — the latter for a pai'cel averaging 7£lb ; first heavy, 13s to 13s 9d ; lightand medium, 6s 3d to lis 9d'; horse hides, 6s 9d to 7s; calfskins, 4s to 5s 3d ; yearlings, 8s ; horns, 5s to 7s ; bones, £5 to £8 ss ; kip leather, 19J to 20d ; sole, 9d ; harness, lOJd ; neatsfoot oil, 5s 6d." The* "South Australian Register" of the 18th inst., reports the Adelaide markets : : — " Wheat— We have no change to note. It is difficult to give a quotation, but purchases have been made in Adelaide at 8s 3d. The parcel mentioned yesterdayas having changed hauds on Monday was of fair quality. Flour is from £20 to £21 per ton. Another \ery dull day has been passed in the import market. We nave not heard of anysales. There is an inquiry for woolpacks, but we have not heard of any sales at present."
