The proceeds are to be devoted to the funds of the Hospital. The objects' of the entertainment are to promote more frequont
social re-unions, and at the same time supplement the funds of charitable institutions. . Ameeting of the Committee of the Afcclimathation Society was held at the : Government Offices, on Thursday, 18th June. There were present^His Honor the Superintendent, (in the -chair) > Messrs Nurse, M.Arthur, Lumsden, .Wood, Crouch, and Butts, (Secretary) j Mr Elliot, Civil Engineer, was by invitation, in attendance. The special business of the meeting was to consider the tenders received for the constructioa of salmon and trout ponds on the selected site on the Makarewa River, the property of John Morton, Esq. After careful consideration it was resolved to refer the matter to a select committee, consisting of Messrs- W: Wood, D. M ( Arthur, and E. D. Butts, to meet this day to make final arrangements for their immediate construction. Messrs Butts, Wood, M' Arthur, and Crouch were" appointed a committee to col'ect subscriptions. It was also resolved in order to afford the members of the committee residing a distance from town the opportunity of regular attendance, that the ficat Thursday in every month be fixed upon for the meetings, and in the event of special meetings being necessary, notice* should be given by the Secretary, who was also requested to write to the Secretary of the Tasmanian Society soliciting him to procure singing birds and fish to bo despatched at the same time as the ova was forwarded. , The following is the state of H.M. Gaol at Ihvercargill for the fortnight ending 17th current, viz., v sentenced to penal servitude, 4 males ; sentenced to hard labor, 3 males j sentenced to imprisonment only, 2 males ; criminal lunatic, 1 male ; committed for trial, 1 male ; total, 11 males. In the Resident's Magistrates' Court yesterday the business consisted in the hearing of^'-two civil cases. The first was Lattimore v. M'lntosh. The plaintiff sued the defendant for £31 7s 6d, for work and labor done, but during the hearing of the case a set-off was put in by defendant. Several witnesses were examined on both sides, and the magistrate deducted from the set off £9 15s, giving judgment for £12 133 2d, with costs £6. The next casa was Ellis y. Campbell, for non-payment of rent, £57 2s 6i. Judgment for plaintiff, with costs, £3 los.
