PUBLIC HALL.
( TO THE EDITOE OP THE SOUTHLAND TIMES.) Sir, — The situation in which the Committee of the Penny Eeadings' Association is placed ought to stimulate the puplic of Invercargill to exertion The want of a good central room for public meetings, concerts, &c, has long been felt in the towi^ and several efforts to get up a Mechanics Institute have failed, principally owing to this want. There are several reserved sections near the centre of the town, one of which I have no doubt would be "granted if sufficient money was subscribed rto entitle a committee to ask for it. A neat and sufficiently large wooden building containing reading and class rooms on the ground floor, and a large hall upstairs might (I should think) be built and furnished for about £700 and 1 have no doubt, if the town was properly canvassed, the greater part of this sum might be raised in a week. But if only half of the money was in hand a committee would be quite safe to commence operations, trusting to a concert and a bazaar, when the hall was finished to clear" off the debt. I enclose my name and promise five pounds (£5) towards this object as soon as it is on foot. — Tour's &c, Mechanic. June 15th, 1868. ♦ — ■ — — I
