THE COAL DISCOVERIES.
(TO THE EDITOR. OP THE SOUTHLAND TEttKS),
Sic, — I have learnt from notices in your paper, and from individuals, that valuable coal deposits have been discovered in the Winton district, that some two or three tons have been brought to town and tested by the Railway Engineer, but I have not seen any report upon it. It suggests itself to me that however valuable it may be considered to get reports from government theoretic geologists, that a less tedious and more reliable estimate of its value could be obtained by a very simple process. What I would suggest is that the government should offer to supply all the blacksmiths with, say, two cwt. of each sample of the coal produced, requiring from them a faithful report of the result of their practical tests. By this means valuable and reliable information would be obtained. 1 know that there ard iron-workers in this town, who from experience in the testing of coal in the coal districts of England, would be able not only to give an opinion as to the value of the sample tested, but with probably correct judgment as to what is likely to be found if deep shafts are sunk. I am, Sir, • BLACKSMITH. Invereargill, 12th June, 1868.
