POLITICAL— PROVINCIAL.
There is little political speaking to record. The Council has not been in session, and the Government has been quietly working out the policy sanctioned by the Council. The preparations for the completion of the Oreti Railway have been made. The order for the iron rails required has been ordered, and other preliminary steps taken. Since the last meeting of the Council the necessity for the completion of this line has become more urgent. Extensive coalfields have been discovered in close proximity to an ironstone country of great value. When the railway is made to "Winton, private companies will be able to work both the coal and iron fields with profit. The Government has been active in other operations. The roads are being vigorously pushed forward; coal prospecting, under the superintendence of Mr Thompson, carried on; and, as far as circumstances permitted, other public works have been proceeded with. The subject of immigration is commanding public attention, and it is more than probable that during the next session of the Council more extensive provision will be made to secure funds to obtain a regular importation of emigrants from home, than has hitherto been the case.
