Times Office,
Thursday Evening; Since our last commercial report business has, been somewhat dull, and purchasers have been confined to sorting up of stock on hand. The engagements of the early part of the month have passed off without default, and the mercantile portion of the province may be regarded as sound and healthy ; we have literally no change .to note a3 to Btocks or quotations. The arrivals of every class of goods in demand have been apparently in ratio with the wants of retailers, having been taken up immediately on landing. To this rule however flour forms an exception, being held in few hands in heavy quantities under expectation of an advance. The deficiency of the crop of last season in Victoria and New South Wales appears to justify the anticipation; nevertheless, our importations from Victoria of their own flour have been somewhat in excess of the average. But little provincial produce has found its way to market since our last owing to the state of the roads and the long continued heavy rains and storms. The result of the late harvest is now ascertained to be more favorable than was estimated, both as regards the yield and quality. A considerable amount of station business has been done during last month, and several valuable properties of this class have changed hands. Money for investment is plentiful at reduced rates, and the facility with which it is obtained in large sums evinces the confidence of lenders in the future prospects of the pastoral interest. Messbs Russell and M'Collotigh report — Since the departure of last mail on the 3rdinßt. business has been characterised by excessive dullness and transactions have been very limited. This may in a measure be accounted for by the absence of country buyers, the state of the roads, and the rivers being considerably swollen. On this account we had to postpone two cattle sales, it having proved impossible to muster. Hobsbs. —The market has continued very bare of-saleable stock. Good useful draught are enquired for, and would find purchasers. Sheep. —We have disposed of a lot of 130 to 140 hoad of fat ewes and wethers privately, for the former lls 6d ; and 15s for the latter. On the 15th at the Bridge Inn, we shall offer Mr Sinclair's. Cattle. —We have in our hands, and shall offer at our yards, about the 20th inst., a very superior mob (140 head) imported cattle, ci "Susan," from Newcastle, N.S.W. These consist principally of young heifers, are perfectly healthy, and every way calculated to remove the existing prejudice to imported stock. Our other sales are respectively on the 15th, at the Bridge Inn,
Cattle. — We have in our bands, and shall offer at our yards, about the 20th inst., a Tery superior mob (140 head) imported cattle, ci "Susan," from Newcastle, U.S.W. These consist principally of young heifers, are perfectly healthy, and every way calculated to remove the existing prejudice to imported stock. Our other sales a re respectively on the 15th, at the Bridge Inn,
Sutherland's and 17th at WaUacetown, and we are instructed they are quiet and suited to requirements of the market. Station Property. — We are in treaty for the disposal of stations, situated both in thiß and the Otago province, but we have not as yet operated. Holders are firm in their demands, and are not inclined to abate in price. Land and House Propbrtst is most difficult to move, and we cannot anticipate a re-action much before the spring. Merchandise. — We held on the 4th in?t, at Mr Todd's store, near the Jetty, a clearing out sale, and were the prices a criterion of the market, the result would appear very unfavorable. The attendance was poor, and few were aware of the miscellaneous assortment, or that the goods were to be sold to the highest bidder. The store not finding a buyer, in consequence of the locality, we are offering on the 12th inst, the timber of which it is built. Our sales of trees, plants, &c, continue to attract attention but prices are very low. The pick of the Sydney nurseries, ex " City of Melbourne," consisting of the choicest plants are now in our hands, and will be sold on the 13th inst. at our rooms.
