PENNY READINGS.
(to the editor of the southland times)
Sib, — I have attended each of the Penny Readings which has been given in the Exchange Buildings, and have been Mghly gratified at the entertainment and instruction brought forward. I think it is a great pity there should be no public hall in Invercargill, and that a hard working body like that which has get up Penny Readings should be at such an uncertainty as to where their next meeting should be. I hear there is a difficulty, and being one of a number who signed a memorial to His Honor the Superintendent for the use of the Provincial Council Chamber, I shall be glad to see it applied to such a purpose. I think that as this society is particularly a public affair, and not like a club or other society, it is on public grounds entitled to be considered before many other objects for which the use of the Council Chamber might be asked. I trust the memorial may be successful, and that you as a conservator of public interests will use the press in support of the claims of the Penny Reading Society. I am, &c, Citizen.
