CRETE.
The latest news from Crete is that another battle has been fought, and resulted in the death of 2CO Turks, although the Sultan's gun-boats were in the immediate vicinity of the battlefield. G eneral Coroneos landed at Canca on the Ist March with a fresh supply of picked volunteers, and others are to follow. The Provincial Government publishes an official bulletin of Turkish massacres and crimes, disclosing the fact that from June 1, 1867, to January 1, 1868, 124 married women, and 43 maids of from ten to 20 years of age, and 37 of from 20 to 30 years ; 55 children, and 345 men, chiefly aged, were massacred. Eightyfour married, and 206 nnmarried women were ravished by the Turks. Thirty-five corpses we^e devoured by dogs. Twentythree victims were burned alive, and 45 women were tortured. Eight churches were desecrated and disgustingly outraged by the Moslem soldiery. The Russian fleet humanely continues to carry non-combatants to Greece. The Cretan Commission at Athens has addressed an appeal for help to all the sovereigns of Europe, and to the President of the United States. The Holy Father was the first to respond by forwarding 3,000 francs. The King of Greece contributed 15,000 francs, A railway from Athens to the Piaseus is to be opened in August next. It wil] connect the capital with the seashore by a 15 minutes' ride in the cars.
The royal decree which institutes th« new order of the Italian Crown gives th« following as the motive of the creation :— " The independence and unity of Italj having been recently consolidated by the annexation of Yenetia, we have decidec upon consecrating the recollection of thai great event by the creation of a new Orde] of Chivalry, intended to recompense signa merit both in Italians and foreigners, and especially such as directly concerns the interests of the nation. The order is divided into five classes : — Grand cordon the number not to exceed 60 j granc officer, 150 ; commander, 500 ; officer 2000 ; and knight, indefinite."
