A cwuple of drays, with a considerable quantity of the coal re.-ently discovered on Opt. Howeli's run, arri/ed in town on Thursday, the 28th inst. We believe it is intendoi to use it on the mi - way, with a view of testing its quality. It would be interesting to witness a public trial of the coal • in question. We understand that Mr Robert Cuthbertson has resigned his seat f r the district of Waiau iv the Provincial Council. The prisoners, under the direction of the Provincial Engineer — Mr Dawson — are doing good service in various parts of the town, by repairing drains, side-paths, &c. Of nearly all the public departments, the gaol is the most economically and efficiently conducted ; so much so, that the Governor, Mr Fraser, does the duty of warden when necessary. The sum of £11 14s was collected at the Presbyterian Church, in aid of the funds of the Hospital. i The InvercargiU Rifle Prize Match came off on I the 25th ult. The weather was most unpro■pitious, and consequently the firing fell far short | of expectations. The rain and wind preva : led ■ during the whole day, and the target did not show its division with that distinctness essential to first clasß firing. There was a good muster on the ground including some ladies. The Volunteer Fife and Drum Band, under the leadership of Mr Eae, was in attendance during a large portion of the day and played several marches and other popular music. At noon, at the call of Captain Harvey, three cheers were given for Her Majesty . the Queen. The gallant Captain then announced that another prize match would be arranged for some convenient day in the ensuing mou^h, when two valuable silver medals, presented by ladies, would be the first prizes. The subjoined is a list of the scores made : —
