In the year 1841, the quantity of tobacco oleared for consumption in the United Kingdom amounted to 13|oz per head of population. In the year 1861, the amount had increased to lib 2ioz per head of population ; and in the year 1865 to lib soz. ' So greatly is the habit 1 of smoking tobacco extending in this country. — Times. A paper-mill at the town of North Shapreigh, in Maine, is at present engaged in manufacturing leather-board, made of leather chips, &c. It employs ten hands, and turns out about one ton per day. A correspondent of the "Irish Times" has telegraphed from London that a young member of the aristocracy lost one Wednesday £10,000 at whist. The Emperor Napoleon has sent Queen Augusta of Prussia a pair of Sevres vases, for which her Majesty had expressed great admiration at the Exhibition. In 1865, 1,200,000 postage stamps got loose from letters and newspapers in the post-offices, and 760,000 in 1866. A prisoner in Taunton gaol, whose term of imprisonment expires in a short time, has just been left a legacy of £16,000. A teacher said to a little girl at school, "If a naughty girl should hurt you, like a good girl you would forgive her, wouldn't you ?" " Yes, mann," she replied, " If I couldn't catch her." We are told that one of Mr Hullah's daughters intends to attempt the stage. A new comedy, on an equivocal story, by M. Emile Augier, " Paul Forestier," is said to have completely succeeded at Paris. The " Glasgow Citizen" says : — We have it on good authority that a Roman Catholic heirarchy is about to be established in Scotland ;_ that Bishop Lynch, at present residing at Carstairs, is to be the Archbishop or Cardinal; and that Father Parkinson, an Oxford convert, is to be Bishop of Glasgow. ■ A man, with a very large bald head, was complimented on the fact that his caput was analogous to Greenland. " Why so ?" he asked. "Because it is a great white bare place," was the reply. The Rev Dr Chapin says that a man living amid the activities of the nineteenth century is a oncidenaed Methusalah.
