The Panama, New Zealand and Australian Royal Mail Company's s.s. Otago, W. J. O. Symons, R.N.R. Commander, left Sandndge pier at 3.30 p.m. on the l*th instant, but was obliged to anchor near the West Channel Light Ship, in consequence of very thick weather, started again at 5 a.m. on the 15th, and passed Port Phillip Heads at 6 a.m. j and from thence to the Solanders at 6 a.m. on the 19th ; had made rapid progress, being only 4 days out, but she then encountered a terrific N.W. gale and very thick weather, which rendered it dangerous to proceed further without picking up land, was hove to for 24 hours, during which time it blew with great violence accompanied with heavy rain, at daylight on the 20th sighted Stewart's Island, and arrived at Bluff Harbor at 1 p.m. Since the last vi-it of the Otago to this port she has been to Sydney for a thorough overhaul, and from the great speed obtained from her, 13£ knots an hour on the passage down, she still carries the reputation as being the crack boat on the coast.
