London, April 9. Sir Eoderick Murchison has received a letter, dated Zanzibar, 4th February, announcing the arrival of the long expected Arab messenger with despatches from Dr Livingstone. A memorandum from Sir Eobert Montgomery states the causes of the discontent of the natives of India with British rule, and advocates the increased employment of natives in duties connected with the Government. The Earl of Cardigan is dead. The latest Atlantic cable telegram announces that the Democrats have gained the Connecticut elections. D'Arcy M'Gee has been assassinated at Ottawa. The assassin has not been discovered. Telegraphic communication with India has been interrupted by the breakage of the Persian Gulf wire, causing a delay of ninety hours. i Advices from the Abyssinian expedition state that King Theodorus was entrenched on Talanta plateau, and that he intended giving battle there. The fifth brigade was to advance on Ashangi on the 11th of March. Nearly all the troops were now on the high lands, and large supplies were collected in the neighborhood of Antalo. Letters received from officers at head quarters state j that Theodorus is said to have thirteen '

guns in Magdala, and was storing the place with provisions. He was aIBO said to have 10,000 disciplined troops, and quite a determined fight was expected. The British officers aud men were anxious to storm the fortress. Later advices state that the advanced guard had arrived at Antalo. The roads were extremely bad. A detachment had opened a mule road only for provisions. The head-quarters were at Ashangi. In the middle of March all was well. Lucien Bonaparte has been created a Cardinal. The changes made by Mr Disraeli in the Cabinet are few. Lor Hunt takes the Chancellorship of the Exchequer, Lord Cairns the Woolsack. Sir Page Wood is the new Lord Chief Justice, and Mr Walpole has retired from the Cabinet. London, 9th April. Sir Roderick Murchison has received a i letter from Dr Kirk, dated Zanzibar, 4th i February, announcing the arrival of ! messengers with despatches and a letter from Dr Livingstone, which the messenger had had in his possession for twelve months. Dr Livingstone had then arrived at Ujy, which is half-way along the Lake Langanjika. The American steamer Shenandoah has gone to Corea, to inquire the fate of G-eneral Sherman.
