RIVERTON V. INVERCARGILL.
' The return match between the RiveTton and '""' -InvercargiU Riflemen took place at the Invercar- , giU Butts, on Thursday, the 30th April. . i; Considerable interest was manifested in the event, and the Rivertonians were decidly the ' favorites. The shooting commenced at 12 o clock, Captains Insfcone and Harvey, Lieutenant j Geisow, and other officers being present. Tbe InvercargiU ten were the first to fall in. ••From the commencement ifc was observed that our local men had considerably more confidence in their skiU than they had on the occasion of the match at Riverton, while the Riverton men, remembering former achievements, had strong : faith in their powers and fuU confidence that they * would win. By the time that the fir3fc range had been fired, (300 yards) it became evident that if Riverton was to win ifc would be a close run. At this range the shooting, with few exceptions, was v^ry fair — almost good — and the two scores were •within two of each other, the Rivertonians the ; highest. The only marked difference between the two, teams was the evenness of the Riverton teams' shots as compared with those of InvercargiU. The former proved that they had aU - had constant practice, while the latter had many first-das3 shots: with a sprinkling of apprentice _. : hands. At the k secend range (400 yards) the InvercargiU, men went in and made some very good scoring, beating their antagonists by twenty points. At the third range (500 yards) the constant steady practice of the Rivertonians, and .the quality of their rifles told with great effect ' and enabled them to puU up much nearer to their ' opponents' score than might have been expected. ~ The match was conducted in the most friendly j- • . . manner, honorable emulation appearing to be the ; prevailing feeling. The foUowing is the scores : — " ■ INVERCARGILL. •■■■■■ 300. 400. 500. Total. Captain Harvey ... 6 10 0 16 Private I. Henderson 17 14 10 41 — MiUar 6 9 8 23 — F.
