The TJnited States Statistical Bureau, attached to the Treasury Departments, reports that there were in this country at at the close of 1867 54,325 miles of railways, of which 38,605 miles were completed, and the aggregate cost of roads and their equipments was 1,654,050,799 dols. Pennsylvania is the leading railroad state, with 4192 miles completed, costing 221,947,857 dols. Ohio has 3397 miles ; Illinois, 3224 ; New York, 3182; and Indiana, 2306 miles. The annual report of the coffee trade of the United States shews that 226,322,811 lbs. were imported during 1867, as compared with 160,392,983 lbs. in 1866. This is a larger importation than for any year since 1859, when coffee waa free of duty. The production of anthracite coal in the United States during 1867 was 12,650,571 tons, an increase of 271,081 tons as compared with 1866. The total productions of coal during the year was 25,800,000 tons, the yield of bituminous and other kinds being estimated for some of the mines outside of Pennsylvania. The American coal trade for 1867 is reported to have been a very unprofitable one, nearly all the producers having lost money.
