San Francisco news has been received from the Sandwich Islands to January 18th. The steamer brought ahout 400 toDs island produce, and her news is of much interest. By this arrival we learn of the loss of the three first-class American ships at the guano islands. These wrecks occurred as follows : The ship Lizzie Oakford, 1126 tons, Captain Roco, wrecked on Howland s Islands, September 25th, 1867, with 1300 tens of guano ; ship Minnehaha, 1696 tons, Captain Bursley, wrecked on Baker's Island, December 3rd, 1867 ; ship "Washington, 1071 tons, Captain Berry, lost on M'Kean's Island, December 4th, 1867, with 800 tons guano. There is no doubt that hurricanes are as liable to occur in certain regions of the Pacific as in the West Indies, and that they may be looked for only at particular seasons of the year. In the Carribean sea these violent gales are expected-from the Ist of August to the Ist of November, and the intervening months are known as the " hurricane months." Vessels bound for the Carribean Sea at that particular season are invariably compelled to pay higher rates of insurance. The hurricane region of the Pacific seems to obtain chiefly about the latitude and longitude of the guano islands ; violent gales may be expected from the Ist September to the middle of January. In point of intensity, the West Indian hurricttnes undoubtedly exceel ; but those of the Pacific are rendered quite as dangerous, by reason of inferior harbor securities. Some idea of the force of the gale which wrecked the foregoing vessels may be had from the fact that the barque Garstang, lying at anchor at one of the islands, was abondoned by her crew, under the impression that she would founder at her anchors. Sometimes she would be entirely submerged for several seconds. — " Tasmanian Times."
