The return match between the Riverton and Invercargill Riflemen took place at the Invewar<rill Butts, on Thursday, tho 30lh April, (■'onsidorable interest was manifested^ m the event, and the , Rirertonirms were deadly the favorites. From the commencement it was observed that our local men had considerably more confidence m their skill than they had on the occasion of the match at Riverton, while the Riverton men, remembering former achievements, had strong faith i'l their powers and full confic-.enco that they would win. By the time thnt the first range had been fired, (300. yards) it became evident that if Riverton was to win it would be a close run. At this range the shooting, with few exceptions, was v-ry faiS-almost good-and tho two scores were within two of each other, the Rivertonians the lushest The only marked difterence between the two teams was the evenness of the Riverton teams' shots as compared with those of Inver-car-ill. The former proved that they had nil had constant practice, while the latter had many first-class shots with a sprinkling of apprentice, hands At the secend range (4UO yards) tho Invercargi.l men went in and made some very cood scoring, beating their antagonists by twonrv poi'it*. At the third range (500 yards) the constant steady practice of the Biyertomans, and tho quality of their rifles told with great effect and enabled them to pull up much nearer to their ! opponents' score linn might have been expected. The nwtch was conducted in the most fnendiy. manner, honorable emulation appearing to be the prevailing feeling. Tho ioUowmg is tho scores:— IN y EEC ARGILL.
Thus the InVcrcargill Company won by eight points. It was a closely contested match. It will be seen from the table that the highest seqres made were those of Mr Reese, (hivercargill) and Mr Robertson (Riverton) viz., ! a tie at 42. After the match had terminated the two gentlemen shot off for the honor of being as highest shot, and Mr Robertson won. The day was cxtromely fine and favorable for the shooting.
