ST. JOHN'S CHURCH.

(TO THE EDITOB 05 TUB SOirrHLAKD TI^CE3.) Slit, — In your issue of the 24th inst. you give, an account of. the state oi the grounds belonging to each denomination in Invercargill, and ; as a member v of the Church of England, I felt grieved to see such a poor account of my own church. You say that the Episcopalian congregation have much difficulty in raising money ; from what I can understand, St. John's Church is out of debt, and it ig**?onsidered advisable not to get into debt again ; and, Sir, I don't think the shortness' of cash is to be wondered at, considering the few people that belong to the Church of England in this place- — why, Sir, it is a great difficulty in keeping up anything. Some are here to-day and gone to-morrow. Now you know as well as I do that it is a great difficnlty to keep up any society here. Look at tho limited population, then to the stateof the money market —everyone has as much as he or she can do to paytheir way andsometimeshardly that. Times are not as they used to be. Where are our reading rooms, our debating clubs, pur Philharmonic- and other societies R They are gone : and is it to be wondered at ? No ; because the people are nearly always shifting from place to place — nothing is steady. With regard to the fence, I only hope it' will be a durable one, and a real one j and it need not be a very expensive one. Timber is now much cheaper than formerly. As a wen-king man, I think the plan would be for every member of the. Church to give say 2s 6d, or whatever they like : the fence would soon be paid for. I am not much in figures, but I believe it would amount to a good sum.. I don't wish to enter upon a controversy. ; I don't think it is necessary. lam willing to give my 2s 6d. Hoping you will give a better account of St. John's next time, — I remain, &c, A Member op the Chubch op England. . April 27,1868.
