In the reign of Henry 111., the city of London petitioned Parliament against two nuisances, viz., Newcastle coal, on account of its smell ; against hops, on account of their spoiling the taste of beer. Also, The whole of that Valuable Freehold Estat, consisting of about 1700 acres of rich arable land having nearly two miles frontage on the western branch of Jacob's Kiver, well fringed with good bush on three sides, and watered by two navigable creeks, which intersect the land, naturally dividing it into paddocks. This was one of the earliest large selections made in the Province, and is known as one of the best.
