CHINA.
(From the Overland China Mail Feb. 23.) It is currently reported that Sir R. Alcock will leave China during the present year. The rumor gives much satisfaction, but requires confirmation. The British Minister has issued a notification warning British subjects against trusting to Chinese " security men." The Taotai of Kewkiang has paid lOOdol. as compensation to a British subjecd illegally arrested by him. The P. and O. steamer Niphon struck on a reef off House-hill, near Amoy, at half-past eight p.m., on the 23rd ult., and broke in two about the middle of next day (24th). Everything was lost, save one bag of mails. Two' Europeans, five Chinese of the crew, and six Chinese passengers were drowned. Much sympathy is felt for Captain Peak, the officer in command. Several daring acts of piracy have been perpetrated off the Saddle Islands, near Shanghai. The rebels have committed great atrocities vi Shantung, and the country people have destroyed a large number of them. 30,000 are estimated to have perished in this way and by cold and hunger. They have again apeared in force, however, opposite Chinkeang.
