The "Daily Timeß" contains the following commercial article : — In the business of the week just closed a fair amount of animation has been witnessed, and for most goods a steadily maintained demand experienced. In town .andi country trade, the improvement has been more felt than in business for coastwise requirements, which has not yet recorered any great activity. In the markets there are few alterations to notice : one or two items have changed in the direction of improvement, but quotations are generally at previous rates with firmness. Breadstuff's hare slightly advanced. At the mills, town-made flour is quoted at £19 to £19 10s. Good old samples of wheat command 7s ; inferior and new, 6s 6d ; barley, 4s. Oats hare again reached 3s. The demand for export has been good, and to a moderate extent continues ; but oW oats are becoming scarce. Potatoes realise £7. steady trade continues to be done in sugars, at maintained rates. Late advices from the Mauritius have further tended to harden prices. A better demand has also been experienced for teas, and though no very heavy transactions are taking place the prospects of the market are becoming better. Provisions are dull. Bacon and hams without change, the scanty sales made evidencing no alteration in prices. Imported cheese is heavy in stock and difficult of sale at prices covering cost ; Colonial in small parcels barely realizing Bd. Butter slightly improving. The spirit trade has been quiet, buyers holding over for the Home mails, the intelligence by which has not, however, affected the market except in Q-enevas, which are held for a further advance. All other spirits remaining very firm. Sales of new brew acs (chiefly M'Ewan's) are reported at prices not transpiring, but supposed to be nearly or quite equal to previous ruling rates. Ales in glass continue especially dull. Q-ood brands of stouts are in increasing request. Cornsacks have been in active demand j early in the week sales were made at 14s ; soon after, however, 15s was obtainable, and even a better rate had to be paid

for some small rwels '• the stock in h»nd is WcJ i by one or two firms, who demand prices which , at present have not been conceded. Mult and hops barely maintain last quotations. Kerosene < is also weak ; the market nominally without . change, but nothing doinp. Transactions in candles light, but rates maintained.
