METEOROLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS.
Januabt, 1868. Mabtendaie. — The weather continued cold showery, and unsettled. A heavy, fall of rain occurred on the Bth (1-246 inches being registered in twenty-one hours), and slight thunder-storms on the Ist, 2nd, sth, 6th, 7th, and 12th. Hail fell on the 20ch. A smart shock of earthquake was felt at 6.5 p.m. on the 24th. No subterranean noise was audible at this station. The vibrations were perceptible for nearly s> nv'uute. ,- Babometeb (corrected and' reduced).— Mf i, 30-252 (25th) ; mm., 29*178 (8th) ; mean 29-811 ; range, 0-874 inches. Thebmombtjbb (in shade). — Max., B^*2- (26th. and 27thj ; mm., 37*1 (20th) ; mean temperature of the air, 54-6 deg., which is no less thau 6-8 deg. below the nine years' average; totftl range, 53 - l ; mean daily range, 19.1 deg. Hy&BOMETEB.— Dew point, 44*7; vapour tenison, '295 inches ; humidity, *69 inches. Radiation.— Max. solar, 118-3 (26th) j mm.. terrestrial, 329 (18th). Rainfall.— Total, 5*308 inches, I*l4 inches above the nine years' average ; max. 1*246, (9th) j rain fell on sixteen days. ■■-■■..■- Clotjd.— Mean amount, 60. Wind.— N., 2; N.E.,0; 8., 1j S.E., 9; .&,- --1 j S.W., 1 ; W., 11 ; N.W.. 5 days. Anemometer. — Mean daily movement, 139* inches ; max., 430, (23rd). Febbttaby, 1868. Mabtendaib.— Very fine during Ist and 2nd strong gale (8.5. E.), with thick, misty weather on 3rd (the day of the great floods in Otago, &c., bufno rain. On 4th, a thunderstorm of nearly four hours duration : much thunder and lightning and a little rain, but no hail, although at the Waikivi (district five miles S.) a violent hailstorm is reported to have occurred, sufficiently severe to break windows. Fine on sth j gale (W.) on 6th and 7th ; then very fine, and sometimes with rain, until 20th— a f?w slight showers on 15th and 16th alone excepted. Eemainder of month cold, showery, and unsettled.
