DESTRUCTION OF AN AMERICAN STEAMER BY FIRE.
The steamer Baleigh, from New York for New Orleans, caught fire off the coast of South Carolina, on 24th December, and is a total loss. There were fifty-five persons on board, who took to the boats when the disaster occurred. Ten of these are known to have been drowned, while fourteen are still missing. The remaining thirty-one have been rescued by passing vessels and taken to Charleston. Tugs havebeonsent fromthatcity, and have been cruising near the scene of the disaster, but without success aa yet in finding any of the missing persons. The Raleigh was a large side-wheeled steamer, valued at £175,000, and belonged to the line between New York and New Orleans.
