Commercial Intelligence.
Times Opbice, Saturday Evening. Mr Wm. Todd, Auctioneer, reports the sale of cattle (the property of Mr F. Robins) held at Pellings' yards, WaUacetown, yesterday, to have realised as follows :— Milch cows and springers, £10 10s to £16 10s ; yearling heifers (a pen of six), £7 5b j steers, £6 15s to 9 10b. There was not the usual attendance of buyers, owing to the farmers being so busy harvesting ; notwithstanding which, the cattle averaged full rates, and the whole of them were disposed of. The sale of Mr Gidney's horses — ex Auckland — sold in the yards, was weU attended. The pair of Java ponies sold for £28. This shipment was principally composed of light draughts, which were sold at prices ranging from £22 to £44. There continues to be a moderate demand for aU kinds of horses. Mr Barclay's team sold last Saturday for £30, £31, snd £49 respectively. Mr H. E. Osbobne, auctioneer, reports : — During the month a fair general business has been done. Some valuable house and landed properties were submitted for sale at the commencement of the month, but no business was done, although the prices expected were not high, considering the demand for freeholds. The reluctance to bid at auction in this instance is not to be taken as a criterion to judge the demand, as several offers have been made for some of the properties privately. House properties in habitable condition continue to be enquired for ; in fact, there is scarcely a house in good repair unoccupied in the town, and rents have advanced in consequence. I have sold the foUowing town properties at the undermentioned prices, viz. : — western half of section 19, block 9, £200 ; section 12, block 70, £125. There is also a fail enquiry for small farms near town, this enquiry has increased in the localities near the main roads that are now being made. Furniture stiU brings firstclass prices at auction. The three days sale of Mr A. H. Puettelkow's furniture at the Theatre Royal, was weU attended, bidding spirited, and satisfactory prices obtained. Horses continue to bring prices encouraging to the shippers. I have to sell a lot, suitable for hack and Ught harness purposes, ex Omeo, on Saturday next, March 28, imported by Mr J. J. Cuff. Money. — The advance in freehold property has affected this market, and 10 per cent, is now the current rate on first-clasa security.
♦ The Melbourne " Argus" of tlie llth inst., says : — Business in the import markets begins to assume a healthier tone. The buyers come forward with greater readiness, and altogether there is more disposition evinced to enter upon extended operations than has been noticed for some time. In the market for breadstuff's, we observed less firmness, and sales of Victorian flour have been made at a somewhat lower figure than was expected to be ruling ere this, putting it beyond our power to quote, over £19 to £19 10s. At the former price, amongst other sales, fifty tons changed hands in one line; and for smaller parcels up to 10s more was obtained. "Wheat has been disposed of at 7s 9d to 8s and 8s ld. Speculation in oats still continues. A line of 10,000 bushels of Tasmanian is reported to have been placed at an extreme figure, over 5s having, it is said, been realised. Some 15,000 bushels of Californian are likewise stated to have been taken up at 4s. Maize is steady at 3s 10 Jd to 4s ; but we do not hear of much business being done in the article. Hops are inquired for. A shipment of fifty pockets and other parcels of 1867 Kent, have been taken up for export, at equal to 2s 6d, duty paid. By auction, candles brought better prices • some 600 boxes were quitted at ll^d for much to llfd for slightly damaged. Sales of teas to a moderate extent are rer ported at Is 6d to Is 9d ; for one line of about 200 half chests, close on Is 8d was paid. For fine teas a good deal more inquiry has sprung up, which is likely to lead to business. Sugars, for trade purposes, are moved off at -£32 10s for low brown crystals, and up to £38 10s for good greys. About 1,000 bags of Mauritius and Java, sold under the hammer, brought £28 to £29 7s 6d for browns, and £30 10s to £33 10s for yellows. The Adeline Burkes cargo of 4,800 bags will be offered on Thursday. Sales of currants are mentioned at 2#d, in bond. Kerosene oil still meets with favor. Some 700 cases of Devoe's, Cozzen's, and Downer's were disposed of at Is 9£d, Is lOd, and Is lid, respectively. Galvanised iron is wanted, and we learn of £29 10s having been refused for one of the better brands of English, 24 and 26 gauge. The Pelham, with the second cargo of new rice from Calcutta, has arrived to-day. The entire cargo will be offered by auction on Thursday.
