Cubiotts Discovebt. — A paper was recently read before the American Association for the Advancement of Science, which stated that on the southern shore of Lake Superior, in Marquette county, Winconsin, were found remoins. of long canals and dams constructed by the beavers for the purpose of transporting their cuttings, consisting of trunks of trees, two or three feet long, : from the place where the trees had faUen to their lodges. Some of these canals were 300, 400, and 500 feet long. They were generally three feet wide, with an average depth of three foet. In order to maintain a continuous depth of water, they made dams at certain distances, andfoUowed the Chinese plan — to whom the lock was uh-known-^of drawing their cargo from one level to another.
