LONDON WOOL REPORT.
Messrs Dax&ett, Dv Cboz and Co., writing under date, London, 16th December, says : — - The public wool sal«s, of which we reported the opening last month, closed on 14th inst. The quantity that has passed the hammer is as follows : —
We regret we cannot report any improTement on the rates established at the commencement of the series. The competition, except for the few parcels of fine wools from Sydney and Victoria, has been languid, causing not only depression, but irregularity in prices. There is a larger proportion of faulty wool from the interior of Australia, and of ill-conditioned parcels from New Zealand and Tasmania, than in previous sales, which, being neglected by a large class of buyers, has had a bad effect on the general market ; as has also the heavy import from the Cape of Good Hope. The increasing production and import into Europe from South Africa and South America, as well as from the Australian Colonies, do not permit us to look for speedy recovery of prices ; and attention should be directed to the improvement of quality, and particularly to the growth of fine wool, in which the depreciation is far less than on any other description, wherever the climate and country allow of it. Assortment and condition must also receive more attention, especially in. New Zealand and Tasmania. Prime Victorian wools have been in short supply since June last, which favors the hope of a fair demand in February, when perhaps also greasy New Zealand, which have been selling very low, maj obtain a somewhat better currency. Some quantity of the latter has been held over in that expectation. The high price of food must, while it continues, have a bad effect on the home trade, and there is. still a want of confidence and of activity in the foreign trade. We can only hope that the decline which has taken place m the price may stimulate the consumption of this staple. • ♦
