THE VOLUNTEER FERE BRIGADE.
(to thbbdixobop thb southland tikes.) Sib, — You ask "what has become of the Invercargill Volunteer Fire Brigade ?" This is a question which those who are interested in the preservation of their property from fire, should answer ; they should Bay whether they have done their duty, and lent all the help they can to keep it in an efficient state ; but as those moat interested have, in fact, done the least, it is hardly probable they will answer your question, so 1 may as well. Tor the last two years there has been a pretty regular attendance of a dozen at the monthly business meetings of the Brigade, but upon no occasion has there been a sufficient number on practice nights to put to work even one engine, without the assistance of bystanders unconnected with the brigade, and that assistance unwillingly given ; and those who have attended best have not been those occupying property in the main Btreets, and most in danger from fire, but principally men having a direct interest in the maintenance of this institution. Two or three summers ago, a " Tire Act" was passed by the Provincial Council, similar to the Act in force in the Province of Canterbury, but in an attempt to improve it, it was so far made worse that the members best acquainted with its probable working have had some hesitation in enrolling under it. An effort is now being made to enrol sufficient members to come under its provisions, and take advantage of what little good there is in it. The officers and members of the brigade at the present time only hold office that there may be some one to take charge of the engines in case of fire. Unless a sufficient number will enrol under the Fire Act, and make themselves acquainted with the duties of Volunteer Firemen, the present brigade will not be responsible for the proper working of the engines and appliances in case of accident. — I am, your's, &c, John" Kjngsland, Captain I. V. F. B.
