COMMERCIAL INTELLIGENCE.

Times Ovxigb, Saturday Evening. Mr W. Todd reports. — My sale of imported horses on Saturday, was very- well attended, but, except for very superior animals, bidding was scarcely so lively as hitherto. ' The whole of Mr Sidney's lot were quitted, but the prices brought, except for first class draught -mares, -for which a good demand still exists, were scarcely such as would satisfy the importer, and indicated a slightly over-stocked market. The lot consisted principally of light draught and harness horses, there being only a few really heavy draught gTymalH, For the former sorts, £17 to £25, was with difficulty obtained, while for mares of the latter class, £40 to £55, was freely offered. A few provincial bred hacks were also offered, and *ent at from £15 to £20. I find frequent inquiries being still made for cattle of all sorts, especially milkers, and anticipate a good attendance, and active competition at my sale of Captain Thomson's lot, which takes place at Wallacetown, on Tuesday (to-mor-row), when I will offer about 40 head good dairy animals, and about an equal number of store stock, mostly young. I have also, a very important sale of stock,, ex Hydra, from Melbourne, to come off on the 14th, to which settlers would do well to give their attention. Mr Elliot is the importer of the shipment, a sufficient guarantee that the cattle are admiaably adapted to improve the herds of. the Province. , . Property feels a little brisker, especially town lots, probably on account of the improved condition of the provincial exchequer, and the resumption of public works. On Wednesday, I have several lots of this description. to offer, the property of Mr M'Kissack, who is leaving the Province. Mr H. E. Osborne, Auctioneer, reports his •ale of miscellaneous confiscated property, &c. Been, well attended by bona fide buyers, and good prices obtained^ The large van sold for £10. ♦ Messrs Royse, Mudie and Miller, of Oam vu, under date February Ist, report as follows : — We regret to have to report a very dull market for the season in stock of every description. The depressing news from the London wool market causes extreme cautbn on the part of buyers of sheep, even at reduced rates ; and unless more cheerful news from that market reaches us before the season is much further advanced, we fear thac operations will be very timired. Notwithstanding the short lambing and heavy losses, there are a larjje number of Canterbury •heep in the market, and sellers desirous io meet buyers in prices. Otago bred are a shade firmer. In cattle, there are few transactions, and in very email lots ; as there are so few in this district holders look for full prices, which the general dulness of the season prevenfs buyers giving. The backward sfcite of the weal her causes also a gloomy feeling amongst our farmers, especially those who have any considetible breadth of ■wheat. Grasses never were more -plentiful, con••quently we may look for a more full supply of fet stock, and at easier rates than last year. Our quotations are as under :— Store Sheep^-2, 4, 6, and 8-tooth ewe», 12s to 12s 6d; 8-tooth dp, 8s to 9s ; maiden ewes, 14s to 14s 6d ; lambs, merino or half-bred, per pair, 18s ; wedderß,;equal'ages, 9s to 10«. Fat Stock— i-heep, delivery on the station, 3d; in Oamaru, 3Jd,per lb ; beef, 40s to 42s 6d per 100 lbs ; fat Jambs, plentiful at 14s tp 35s each. Horsea — Good draught horses are in demand, and very few offering ; but our market is dver■upplied with medium and light draughts, not at til suitable for the state of our roads this year. Only really good hacks are saleable at remunerative rates ... . _ _ Stations — It is pleasant to report, against the unpleasant fall in prices of stock and wool, that enquiries for station p.- operties are more numerous; we expect those to be offered by public sale in Dunedin will sell at fair rates, increased value of country compensating for depreciation in sheep. We have two first-class stations in Canterbury for private sale. :
