DEPUTATION TO THE GOVERNMENT.
At one o'clock the deputation,, consist-., ing of It. B. Martin, A. Carrick, Brodrick, Mudie, Webb, and Captain M'Kinnon, waited upon 'the. Government; c and were received in the Provincial Secre- ; tary's office. ■ ••.- ::.£•.. Mr Carrick, as Chairman of the meeting, explained the object of the deputation; and the resolutions passed were read by the Secretary (Mr Webb),. '-= ■■■-;,- The Provincial Secretary promised tq_ take immediate steps to give effect to the resolutions. The Provincial Government generally communicated with the General Government through Mr Harris ; and if Mr Harris, who took a great interest in the matter, was in town, he would no doubt telegraph the resolutions to Wellington; and the Government would do all it could to assist the. representations of the Chamber. Mr Brodrick suggested that it might be well to telegraph to Southland to ato^i, the despatch of the Amherst. .
The Provincial Secretary said that, as soon as he saw a good chance of a steamer going, he would telegraph to Southland. Captain M'Kinnon said there were pne or two of Her Majesty's steamers in (Jig $tortti at present, and there Was tl:e (si.- Milda. There Trere al.sd , several sieaniers in this port very suitable ; arid he did not suppose there could be any difficulty as to the matter of insurance. There wlis the Albion, and there was the Keera — vessels sufficiently suited for the expedition. The Provincial Secretary read to. the deputation a. telegram which" had been received, from Sp.athiandj relative to the tiesronfc r esetied from the Auckland Isfaiids; . ... Mr E B. Martin' said it appeared from the telegram that a subscription was being Organised in Soiithiadd for a testimonial Ip the officers; arid "crew of the, Amherst, iiHd for presents, to the He thought something might be collected in Duuedin-, but in the meantime, it had been resolved by the trustees of a fund which existed, and the object of which was to relieve distressed and shipwrecked persons, to present a sum of £25. The fund Was especially intended for the relief of Sersons suffering by shipwreck or accients. at sea, and, of course, the .sum whicli they had vote 4 would go excluiiveiy to j;He relief of the survivor's of the G^eral Grant. ~ -The Provincial Secretary repeated his desire to forward the object of the deputation in every way ; and the- deputation retired.
