*In one of the books referred to I have seen it gravely stated that Thomson composed " the seasons " the Manse of Ednam. (1) The tradition that Thomson was born in this cottage must have been well known in 1803 as Fisher the auther of "The Spring Day" has in his book a rhapsody delivered "in the cottage at Ednam where Thomson was born." (2) I refer to William Wright, not White as Howitt calls him.
