At last, after a prolonged correspondence, the necessary quantity of land has been reserved by the General Government to finish the Oreti line of railway. His Honor has steadfastly pursued the policy of progress, and in a quiet and unostentatious manner has largely contributed to the advancement of the true interests of Southland. It must be gratifying to him to feel that he has surmounted more than ordinary obstacles — has overcome the jealousy and pique of party, and consistently advocated the best interests of the great body of the people of Southland. By a wise and prudent expenditure of the funds now in the provincial coffers, and witha determination to curtail departmental expenses, the Government have a fair opportunity of becoming highly popular, and it will be their own fault if, through negligence, they omit to introduce such measures of general utility as will meet with the approbation of the great mass of the people. The following is the telegram announcing the grant of land : — "To His Honor the Superintendent of Southland. •' The Governor will be advised to set apart 60,000 acres to finish the railway. "E. W. Sxapfoed. " "Wellington, 6th January, 1868."
