The Southland Horticultural and Agricultural Society holds it show on the Ist and 2nd of January. This Society has been two years in existence, during which time four shows have been held, all of which have proved successful. The preparation made for the January exhibition are, we understand, more extensive and complete than thoße of previous occasions. The Horticultural department ranks first, but the Agricultural is not of less importance, embracing, as it does, grain, diary produce, vegetables, poultry, &c. The success that attended the Stock Show of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association is evidence that a general interest is now felt in the advancement of a high class of cultivation jof every description. The Association wisely confined its attention (for the present year) to stock, yielding to the Horticultural and Agricultural I Society the whole of the other exhibits on account of it having been the longest established. It is well that so amicable an arrangement was made, inasmuch as it has not diminished the success of the one, and must materially contribute to the advancement of the other. Itistobe hoped that the public will accord that support to the Horticultural and Agricultural Society which the earnest efforts of the committee, and the importance to the Province of fostering such institutions, merits.
