THE MURDER OP THE ROCKHJIMPTON GOLD ESCORT. The Brisbane Courier of the 12th instant contains the following telegram from Rockhampton with reference to the | murder of the troopers forming the escort from thence to Clermont : — ; " Further particulars of the poisoning of the Peak Downs escort men have been received in town. They were found lying on their rugs ot their camp, about I 300 yards from Bedford's public-house, at Mackenzie. Five pigs were lying dead, having eaten of matter vomited by the men. The £4,000 in notes, which the escort were taking to the branch of the Joint-Stock Bank at Clermont, are missing. The ashes of the saddle-bags were found in the camp fire. Inspector Elliot, Constable Griffin, with a party of police, in company with Mr Abbott, the bank inspector, started on Saturday \ morning to investigate the case." On the following day further informaj tion was received to the effect that despatches received from the scene of the murders at the Mackenzie Biver, state that both the Escort men were shot through the head, besides having been poisoned. An enquiry was proceeding, and Commissioner Griffin, lately police magistrate at Peak Downs, has been arrested on suspicion. On this the Courier of the 14th remarks : — "The intelligence received yesterday, and published in our telegraphic news, of the arrest of Commissioner Griffin, for the supposed murder of the escort to Clermont, caused a great sensation in town. The Government received a j telegram stating that warrants had been issued to search Mr Griffin's camp and boxes for the notes stolen. Griffin was well known and generally liked in Brisbane, and one of the last men that j would be deemed capable of a deed so atrocious ; but as it is said that he 1 himself brought news of the murder to Rockhampton, and that he was seen last in the company of the unfortunate troopers, there is only too much reason to suppose that there exists at least a primd fade case for his arrest." ♦ — —
