THE RECEPTION OF THE DUKE OF

EDINBURGH AT AUCKLAND. The following communication, received from the Colonial Secretary, has been published in the Auckland Provincial Government Q-azette : — To his Honor the Superintendent of Auckland. Sic, — As the intended visit of his Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh to New Zealand will soon take place, I would suggest for your Honor's consideration the propriety of a Reception Committee being appointed for the purpose of making the necessary arrange-" ments for the suitable reception of his Royal Highness, an object which I am sure the inhabitants of the Province of Auckland will be anxious to ensure, from a desire both to give a hearty welcome to the Prince, and to testify their loyalty to our Most Gracious Sovereign. The General Government will, from the funds placed at its disposal for the reception or his Royal Highness, be prepared to contribute towards the cost of such arrangements proposed by the committee, with your Honor's sanction, as may be approved, but the expanse of making the necessary preparations for the accommodation of His Royal Highness will only admit of a limited amount being available from that source for those public demonstrations which are fitting to the occasion; I am unable at present to state the exact date when his Royal Highness may be expected, but as soon as I am in possession of reliable information on the subject I will at once communicate it to your Honor. I have, &c, (Signed) E. W. Staffobd. Colonial Secretary's Office, Wellington, November 8, 1867. The Superintendent of Auckland, on the receipt of the above, convened a public meeting which was held on 23rd ult.
