Monday. • The correspondendent of the " New Zealand Herald " writes, respecting the new goldfield at Shortland, — "I have been through the claims this morning, and after a very minute inspection, can verify everything I have said in their favor. Upwards of three thousand people are now on the diggings, and fourteen hundred miners' rights have been issued. A meeting of 2000 miners has been held, v at ..which the Superintendent ot Auckland attended. He said he had come to Kauranga in order to use his influence with the natives to induce them to open up the country. He said that Tehira was obstinate regarding his land and that belonging to other, natives, which it would be unjust to obtain by other means than fair negotiation. Everything would be done to facilitate permanent settlement, in fulfilment of the desires of early settlers near. Such aid as he could give would not "be wanting." Wellington, Tuesday. — The argument in the case of Chapman v. Tooth, commenced on Friday last, was concluded to-day. Case of Buckley v. King now being argued. New Zealand Steam Company has contracted to remove all the troops from Wanganui to Auckland, Taranaki, and Napier. : "Wednesday.
